Cadillac Utilizes Apollo Program Strategy to Assemble Unit from Nothing for Melbourne Race Debut.

Just over a full year in the past at the Nevada Grand Prix, Cadillac were at last awarded the go-ahead as F1's latest entry for 2026. Constructing the organization from the ground up has entailed a frenetic operating tempo that the principal, Graeme Lowdon, has equated to the NASA lunar mission. As F1 descends on Vegas this weekend, Cadillac know time is getting tight.

The Race Against Time to Australia

At the season finale of the campaign to be held in the United States, with just over three months to go before they make their debut for the inaugural time in Melbourne at the 2026 opener, the Cadillac F1 project have made significant progress but, in what must seem like a never-ending task, they are cognizant there will never be enough hours in the day.

The CTO, Nick Chester, became part of the nascent project in March 2023 soon after it was created, when the squad were without even an official entry. He has been at its heart ever since and gets a knowing grin when thinking about the journey.

“There might be a short period looking back at what you have accomplished and go: ‘Amazing, how impressive what we’ve done in under three years,’” he notes. “But then the next minute you consider: ‘Yes, we’ve still got a great deal to do.’”

A Unique Challenge

Chester enjoyed success at the Renault team in the driver Fernando Alonso's victorious years of the mid-2000s and was in control of technical direction at the new Mercedes Formula E team, but no other project has truly matched the task of launching the quintessentially American Cadillac name, a factory team sponsored by the corporate entity, General Motors Corporation, into F1.

“Creating an grand prix team from nothing, when are you ever going to get a chance to do that?” he says. “There's nothing comparable. In an established team you don’t get the possibility to alter cultural approach.”

With each passing day that goes by thoughts are more focused on the approaching critical moment in Australia and expectations are being handled.

“One must presume that any new team entering the sport is likely to start at the back but merely participating will be an achievement in itself,” Graeme Lowdon stated earlier this year and while Nick Chester echoed this he thought the organization had a reputation to build as well.
“Our primary goal we want to show is that we deserve to be there,” he says. “So we arrive and we function efficiently. We seek to prove that we’re a proper team performing the correct procedures on the circuit. Once we’ve shown that our credentials are solid, then we aim to demonstrate progression after that.”

Driver Lineup and Recruitment Effort

In August they contracted Checo Pérez and Valtteri as their pilots for 2026, a tandem remarkable for their invaluable experience in competing at the sharp end in two top-tier teams, Red Bull Racing and Mercedes, and Bottas reflected the sentiment of combative optimism.

“Of course, we have a realistic outlook,” he said. “We have a massive task to do, and it will likely be almost certainly a tough opening, because it's the top level of motorsport. But we’re not there to stay at the back. In my view given this organization, with this team, these people, there is every reason that we shouldn’t be able to advance swiftly up to the pace and taste victory.”

To achieve that goal hiring has been in top gear, with staff now up to over 400 and planned to hit the target of six hundred quickly. Complementing their existing facility at Silverstone, the team are in the phase of finishing an headquarters at the Fishers location in Indy and there is the GM works in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they are constructing the facility to build the power unit, scheduled for 2029 – for now they will operate with Ferrari engines – and the aerodynamic facility in Germany. It is a intricate organization, at odds with the direction in F1 for increased consolidation, and has inspired the new cultural approach to which the CTO alluded.

Space Mission Inspiration

“It's closely based on the Apollo project,” remarked the team principal just before the British Grand Prix in July. “We’re realistic, we recognize how challenging it is. The timelines, are extremely compressed. Well, it's not a space expedition, but it feels like it sometimes.”

So they have adopted, as opposed to the conventional chain of command, a flat management structure comparable to that of Nasa’s, where there were a range of specialist groups all focusing on various components of the program in a variety of locations.

“In a system where you follow a procedure where an issue arises and they raise it up to their team leader, that leader consults a supervisor in another department, it travels back down, the process is very slow,” says Nick Chester. “We give authority to team members to really get on with it. Moving away from managerial sign-off for all decisions is much smoother and faster.”

What Lies Ahead

The effectiveness of this nimble approach will be evaluated in the pressure of racing when the season begins and there is a significant degree on the line for Formula One, too. The Cadillac team have signed as their development driver the 25-year-old American Colton Herta
